Maternal and Infant Health CDC’s Division of Reproductive Health provides scientific leadership in the promotion of women’s health and infant health before, during, and after pregnancy. The World Health Organization says, “ Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period,” but we think maternal health means more than that. “Maternal health” is usually regarded as health during pregnancy, childbirth and the period afterwards. In other words, it is delimited by a time period and a physiologic state – parturition.
